Our Goal: increase the number of diverse Iowans who pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Our Program. Iowa State University’s premier pre-college program works with middle and high schools in Des Moines, Denison and Marshalltown, Iowa, selecting students in the spring of their 7th grade year with potential. Participants meet regularly with SB staff – math and science teachers, or counselors – during the academic year. Regular meetings, as well as visits to Iowa State University and summer opportunities provide participants with academic support and hands-on math and science experiences.

Successful participants are invited to join the high school program. Those accepted meet weekly with SB staff, continue visits to Iowa State, and participate in both summer and academic-year enrichment programs.

Other Components. Teacher enrichment opportunities provide resources and professional development. Parent workshops are also provided. And, since parental involvement is critical to student success, it is a requirement of SCIENCE BOUND.

The ISU Commitment. Iowa State University provides the administrative and financial support critical to the program.

The Results. SB has offered scholarships to more than 200 program graduates. Forty-five SB graduates were on the Iowa State campus in 2006; 49 SB grads now hold degrees from Iowa State, and one SB and ISU graduate has a Ph.D. in biology from Cornell University in New York.
