Partnering with Science Bound

Recruiting, training and retaining a technical workforce remain top priorities for our nation and state. At the same time, Blacks, Latinos and American Indians remain underrepresented in science and engineering (National Science Foundation, Women, Minorities and Persons with Disabilities in Science and Engineering, 2011).

The Science Bound Solution

For more than 20 years, Iowa State University’s Science Bound has addressed the need for a strong, diverse technical workforce by recruiting and preparing young people from ethnic populations that are underrepresented in ASTEM (agriculture, science, technology, engineering and mathematic) fields. Science Bound works directly with nearly 300 students and their families in three Iowa communities for four to five years.

During a critical point in adolescent development, Science Bound supports the academic and career development dispositions necessary for success and brings Iowa State University directly into Iowa’s Black and Latino communities. The result: increased numbers of ethnically diverse Iowans who earn college degrees and pursue careers in ASTEM fields.

Science Bound’s success depends on people like YOU! Make your tax deductible gift to the Iowa State University Foundation.
