For SCIENCE BOUND Students

Welcome to a program that cares about YOU and YOUR SUCCESS!

Here are some resources that can help you along the way:

Program Requirements

Eighth Grade Preparatory Program

Most students are invited to participate in the Preparatory Program during the end of their 7th grade year. Those invited must participate in the Algebra Champions program prior to the start of their 8th grade year. The Preparatory Program consists of monthly meetings with SB teachers in the middle schools, along with visits to Iowa State, during the academic year. Preparatory participants must meet program requirements, including completion of a science fair project and an essay that demonstrates a desire to give to, and learn from, SCIENCE BOUND. Students who successfully meet the program requirements participate in a Crossover ceremony at the end of the academic year in which they are welcomed into the high school program. In Des Moines, rising 9th graders are also required to participate in the Learn and Earn summer program.

High School Program

While students are invited to participate during the end of their 7th grade year, if space is available, some students are also invited to participate the first semester of their freshman year. The high school program meets weekly and includes visits to Iowa State. Activities may include completion of a career exploratoin activity (resources below). High school participants must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0, participate in 75% of the program activities, and present an oral justification yearly for continuation. SB students are also required to participate in a summer academic or career experience. Des Moines students entering the 9th grade MUST attend Learn and Earn and may attend Learn and Earn through 11th grade. During the senior year, students participate in Countdown to Iowa State and are strongly encouraged to engage in a summer internship.

Academic Assistance and Programs

The PreliminarySAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is co-sponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). This standardized test provides firsthand practice for the SAT, but, more importantly, it is the ONLY opportunity you have to enter NMSC scholarship programs. SCIENCE BOUND strongly encourages ALL SB students to take the PSAT during BOTH their sophomore and junior years. If there are questions about fees, please contact the SB main office at sciencebound@iastate.edu or 515/294-1390. For more PSAT information, click here.
