Des Moines High School Students Qualify
For Science Scholarships To Iowa State University
DES MOINES — Seventeen high school students from Des Moines Public Schools have completed the Science Bound program, qualifying them for a full-tuition scholarship to Iowa State University. The students have successfully completed the four-year program aimed at preparing them to obtain a technical degree.
”There is no better evidence that Science Bound can make a difference to these students than their successful completion of our program and graduation from high school,” said Connie Hargrave, Science Bound program director and professor of education at Iowa State. “It proves that they can achieve at a high level and are prepared to flourish at a world-class university such as Iowa State.”
Science Bound is Iowa State‘s premier pre-college educational program to increase the number of diverse Iowans who earn degrees in agriculture, science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It consists of regular science enrichment events, classes and field trips. To successfully complete the program, students must meet minimum academic and attendance standards. The students are required to pursue a degree in science or math at Iowa State to obtain the scholarship.
The graduates include Josue Acosta, Massah Massaquoi and Yadira Prado from Lincoln High School; Mia Chagoya, Humberto Lechuga, Luis Mata-Perez, Chantell Moody and Jared Weatherall from East; Esther Chol, Tahaun Fountain, Gavin Gallegos, Madison Sconiers and Blair Taylor-Wagner from Hoover; Paul Cromartie and Marlie Quinteros from Roosevelt; and Oscar Guaman and Mario Monzon from North.
The students were recently recognized at a banquet held in their honor. The keynote speaker was C. Richard Pope, CEO of Smithfield Foods. The company is sponsoring Science Bound’s expansion into the Denison Community School District.
The banquet also honored five Science Bound students graduating from Iowa State this spring. They are Teresa Abreu, B.S. in dietetics (graduate of Roosevelt); Claribel Orellana, B.S. in civil engineering (graduate of North); Liza Sharp, B.S. in microbiology (graduate of Roosevelt); and Natalie Lawrence, B.S. in marketing (graduate of Roosevelt). Another former Science Bound student, Tanasha Taylor, earned an M.S. in human computer interaction from Iowa State to add to her B.S. in mechanical engineering.
Science Bound works with middle schools and high schools in Des Moines, Denison and Marshalltown, Iowa. Funding is provided by Iowa State, the Institute for Physical Research and Technology, the Des Moines Public Schools, corporations and private donors. Since the start of Science Bound in 1990, over 200 students have been offered scholarships. The program is administered by IPRT, a network of scientific research centers at Iowa State.
