Faces of the Future

2009 Banquet Honors and Showcases New Faces in Science

Students, families, teachers and supporters filled the Marriott Hotel for the annual SCIENCE BOUND Honors Banquet on May 1, 2009, in Des Moines. The event honored Iowa State University graduates, Des Moines high school graduates and other outstanding SB students in addition to featuring special guest speakers.

The keynote speaker for the banquet was Dr. Nancy Sebring, superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools. In her address, Sebring said she believed SB students would play a crucial part in solving world problems of the future.

“Thank you for believing in your dreams, for sticking with the work, the hours, the disappointments at times that I’m sure you’ve experienced, because you really are what schools are about. You are the future,” she said.

The banquet also featured student speaker Jowelle Benson Mitchell, who graduated from ISU with a master’s in education. In her speech, Mitchell advised the SB students to take the opportunities given to them to control their own futures.
“Be committed to your goals, surround yourself with positive people and enjoy the SCIENCE BOUND journey,” she said. “I know you can, and will, be the new faces in science.”

The event also featured demonstrations by two ISU students. JaRae’ Shelton (pictured at right), junior in food science, and Ricardo Hernandez, senior in chemical engineering, discussed how the SB journey prepared them to become a food scientist and a chemical engineer respectively.

To cap off the night, Des Moines high school SB graduates were recognized by Dr. Connie Hargrave, SB program director, and Dr. Sebring. ISU graduates were recognized and greeted by Dr. George Kraus, director of the Institute of Physical Research and Technology. High school SB students with the highest grade point averages and program participation were also recognized at the banquet by Crista Carlile, science curriculum coordinator for Des Moines Public Schools.
