SCIENCE BOUND Honors Banquet 2008

Making a World of Difference

Banquet celebrates our graduates, students and families!

Over 300 SCIENCE BOUND students, families, teachers and supporters attended the annual SCIENCE BOUND Honors Banquet on April 25, 2008 in Des Moines. The event featured distinguished speakers and special guests as it honored this year's graduating high school seniors, outstanding students, and Iowa State Univesity graduates.

The special guests included students from the Denison Community School District SCIENCE BOUND program. That program, in its first year, is sponsored by Smithfield Foods Learners to Leaders program, as is the Des Moines banquet.

The event started with a welcome from Courtney Maxwell Green from the Office of the Governor and Lt. Govenor of Iowa. SB graduate Tanasha Taylor was then introduced by her brother, SB senior Blair Taylor-Wagner. Tanasha, who was being honored for earning a master's degree in human computer interaction at Iowa State University, told about her journey from participating in SB in the eighth grade to studying mechanical engineering as an undergraduate. Her advice to the SB students was to "Ask what makes you come alive?"

The keynote speaker was C. Larry Pope, CEO of Smithfield Foods, the world's largest pork producer. Pope, a first generation college graduate, said he could relate to SB students. "I believe education is a secret formula for success," Pope said. He also explained how many of today's most pressing issues, such as inflation, food shortages, and oil prices, can be solved by scientists. Pope's address concluded with his eight "secrets of success," (see right-hand column). After his presentation, students from the Denison program presented Pope a special Denison SCIENCE BOUND t-shirt.

Elizabeth Hoffman, executive vice president and provost at Iowa State University, recognized the SB graduates of Iowa State. Crista Carlile, science curriculum coordinator from the Des Moines Public Schools, greeted the SB graduating seniors. Steve Benson, SB teacher and coordinator, announced the outstanding high school students.

The Secrets
of Success

C. Larry Pope, CEO of Smithfield Foods, shared his secrets to success in his address at the SCIENCE BOUND banquet:

  1. Never, ever, be late again for anything.
  2. When somebody gives you a task, go do it.
  3. Complete every task early.
  4. Dress like you want to succeed.
  5. Do 110 percent of what someone asks you to do. Use the extra 10 percent to give your input.
  6. When you're given a chance for more responsibility, take it.
  7. Always be dependable. Always be there.
  8. Drop the word "I" from your vocabulary.
